The huge success of Cwmni Da’s Deian a Loli has continued with a nomination in the Broadcast Awards, one of the UK’s most prestigious television awards – with the winner to be announced in a ceremony in London in February 2019. The Welsh language children’s programme, which is broadcast by S4C is the only Welsh language production to appear on any of the 21 shortlists. Nominated in the live action pre-school category, Deian a Loli is listed in good company alongside five programmes from Cbeebies, Nick Jr, and Disney. The programme has already won Best Children’s Programme at BAFTA Cymru in 2017, and was nominated again at BAFTA Cymru and Celtic Media Festival in 2018.
The show has proved successful within the industry, but its popularity is almost unprecedented among young Welsh viewers. Premiere cinema showings for the third series have sold out across Wales with tickets flying out of the doors. 800 tickets for four showings at Pontio in Bangor sold out within 10 minutes of going on sale. Tickets for the following venues were also snapped up within hours: 2 showings at S4C’s Egin Centre in Carmarthen; 2 showings at y Drwm, National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth; 3 showings at Neuadd Ogwen, Bethesda; 1 showing at Popty Popcorn, Bangor and another showing at Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff.
This comes a few months after signing a contract with distributors Videoplugger who will be taking the series to the international market early next year.
The series’ producer, Angharad Elen says:
“It’s lovely to receive this nomination by Broadcast Awards and I’m very proud of the fantastic production team we have working on the series. But the real thrill comes from seeing how popular the series is amongst Welsh children. We receive letters and emails from young fans every week. I’m looking forward to hear what they make of the new series.”
The new series will begin on Cyw, S4C on Wednesday 2nd January.
